1995 was a big year for me. I graduated High School, moved away to college, and met my husband on the first day I arrived at school at the Freshman Make-Your-Own Sundae Social. ( I know.)
Boy sees girl.
Boy tells girl’s roommate that girl is cute.
Roommate tells girl.
Girl thinks boy is cute, too, but girl notices lots of cute boys lurking, so girl says ‘Heeeeyyyy,’ but doesn’t take boy too seriously.
Girl and Boy started running into each other unintentionally.
Girl and Boy started running into each other intentionally.
Yadda, yadda, yadda- Boy and Girl became a thing.
We were that couple, from very early on.
Always laughing, always together.
We made our way through our freshman year as one…until spring semester was coming to an end and summer break was inching upon us. There would soon be 287 miles separating us. New York to New Hampshire, a whole New world apart.
Hey there Kiddo!
You’re probably on your way home, or home already. What can I say, or can’t I say? There’s so many memories, so many good times, so many talks. I don’t know what to say. (clearly!) You’ve become such a big part of my life over the past 7 months. (SEVEN!) You’ve been there for me all the time, you’ve respected me, and you’ve loved me.
Ya, the summer is coming and we’re going to be away from each other for more than we’re used to. It’ll be a test for our relationship that I know we’ll easily pass. You mean so much to me and I don’t want to lose you over something stupid and the reason I know it isn’t going to happen is that I know you care for me as much as I do for you. So let’s make this work because you are the most special person in my life and I’d like to keep it that way for a very long time. (IS that all? Just a long time? Not FOREVER??) I wrote this little thing, -somewhat like what you wrote me on Valentine’s Day, to show you what’s so special about you and whenever you have doubt about us, if you do, I want you to read it!!
I love you,
Somehow, in a box of moldy letters, I found my Valentine note he was referring to.
And in case you were wondering how we made it through that first summer… we managed. And wrote a lot of great letters that I’ll share with you sometime.
